For a Bangladeshi like me coming to Africa meant an adventurous journey like the journey of ‘Shankar’ of ‘Chader Pahar’ by Bibhuti Bhuson which I read back in the early 80’s! At the old age of 40, having an opportunity to see Africa was overwhelming. After reading the classic at the teen years, I longed for visiting Africa sometime in my life and God Almighty has heard my yearlings! So here, I am, in Cote d’Ivoire, or Ivory Coast doing to peacekeeping job in a country with amazing beautiful landscape and a diaspora of cultural activities.
My plane took off from the airport at Dhaka at 2100 hours on 10th June 2007. I was not alone in the flight. There were as many as 300 plus soldiers with me to go on the same mission. The journey was long, boring and event less as the sky was good, the stopovers at Djibouti, a deserted East African country as it was not a commercial flight. Other other stopover was at Kotoka airport at Accra, Ghana but in both the circumstances,no one were allowed to disembark from the plane. The air conditioners were switched off during the refueling period and the heat was really stifling. But the excitement of reaching Africa overpowered boredom and discomfort in most of the passengers. I started gossiping about the things to se in Abidjan and after about 18 hours of flight, we finally reached , Yamoussoukro, the political capital of Ivory Coast.
